So, those of you also in j537 know that for our final project we are required to do a photo story. I’ve chosen to follow my friend who Irish dances around and try to capture everything it takes to be an Irish dancer. I’ve titled the project “A Day in the Life of an Irish Dancer,” and I think I’m going to focus on all of the dedication and commitment these dancers have given to this hobby. Karmen, my Irish dancing friend, is a full-time college student who also works and sings in the choir at her church, but she still finds time to dance several times a week. Other than time consuming, Irish dancing is also very expensive. These are all things I’m trying to work into my project, if you have any other suggestions or angles to focus on please speak up! I’m also open to ideas about natural sounds. I think I’m going to use Irish Dance music in the background, but do you think that will be too distracting? Well, here are a few photos from my first visit. Let me know what you think.

tea party anyone?

Yesterday was April 15, Tax Day. In rememberane of the infamous Boston Tea Party, Bostonians held a Boston Tea Party in support of lower taxes. Several other cities, including our lovely Columbia, followed suit. This picture is from one of the tea parties in Frankfort Kentucky, whose legislature just passed tax increases on cigarettes and alcohol. The photographer is Joe Biesk from the Associated Press. It’s actually a really great photo, it captures the moment. I like that the colors are very bold and in your face, much like the tea parties themselves.

The next project coming up in my journalism 537 class is a presentation on a famous photographer. My photographer is Parish Kohanim. He is a commercial photographer who works out of Atlanta, GA. This photograph was taken in 2007 by Kohanim. His work is mainly portraits. In this portrait he uses a nice, clean, simple background and does so in all of his photos. The simplicity of the background is one of the most most distinguishing aspects that tie all of his work together. As you can see with this photograph, Kohanim really likes to play with interesting angles. His photography is fun and upbeat. I really REALLY like his work, and I’m looking forward to this assignment!

Carolina Cup

This weekend could possibly be the biggest weekend of the season. Carolina Cup, home of the over-sized hats and fratty bowties, comes to Camden this Saturday. But what would a horse race be without any horses? This will be the third time I’ve gone to cup, and hopefully the first time I’ll actually see the race-I hear it’s a good time. Anyway, this week I chose to post this black and white wide angle photograph that actually is of Carolina Cup a few years ago. maybe nest week’s post will be my own original photos of the race…just maybe. Soooo, if you’re going, look for me there. I’ll be in yellow.

Our next assignment is dealing with toning using photoshop. To get a feel of what this entails I did a little research and found a few that I really like. Majority of the photos were sepia toned, but I found that the ones I preferred the most were actually photographs that had been given a blue tone. I think the blue tone gives images a clean, crisp, and fresher look. Here’s my favorite one!

Palm Trees in Daytona Beach

This week is spriiiiiiiiiing break! In honor of this heaven sent vacation I’m traveling to ever trashy Daytona Beach, which promises to be a good time. This picture is of the palm trees in Daytona Beach, and they’re beautiful! The coloring is bright and vivid, and the angle is interesting and eye-catching. Hopefully while I’m there my pictures will turn out this good!

So I really like this picture…a lot. I spotted these wheels in the Columbiana Mall parking lot and fell in love with it immediately. It was probably once on pimp my ride. It was taken one night and it was really dark outside, but I nevertheless it turned out really well. The thumb belongs to my friend Mitch Davis, and I wish I knew who owned this car. Anyway-Keep your eyes peeled for this sweet ride around town.

REBA!

So I know this picture isn’t in focus, but I’ve decided to become a little more personal. This photo was taken with my canon point and shoot on November 21, 2008 = the best night of my life. I, Jessica Rose Huggins have been a huge fan of Reba since before I can remember. I love everything Reba…red hair, the show, her music, she’s a legend! On this particular night I sat on the eleventh row with the boyfriend who wasn’t dragged I promise. If you watch the show then you’re familiar with Barbara Jean and her crazy shenanigans, well Barbara Jean (Melissa Peterman) opened the show with her stand up comedy. She was hilarious- an actual hoot if you will. After the comedy routine, Reba performed and was amazing. Oh, and Kelly Clarkson was there too. I can’t even put into words how much I enjoyed it. I can officially die happy now. I’ll just leave you with a Reba McEntire quote of the day : “To succeed in life, you need three things: a wishbone, a backbone and a funny bone.”

Close Up and Personal Giraffe Style

Everyone went to the zoo last week, and I missed out. In honor of my misfortune I’ve chosen to showcase this beautiful photograph. Giraffes are by far the coolest animal, and I think that this picture proves that. I love the closeness, it makes it feel more intimate-nice use of cropping. The background is clean, and the detail is magnificent. You can see all the whiskers, and even the twinkle in its eye. The giraffe’s entirety isn’t all in focus, but I think that’s one thing that makes it so interesting. Overall, I wish I had been at the zoo

baby in black and white

I like this portrait alot. I think black and white gives photographs a more sophisticated feel, and that feature really works well here. The lightening is exceptional, and I love the fact that only the baby’s face is in focus, and who doesn’t love babies? I found it on google, and it was taken by a photography agency.

New York Cab in Grand Central

I wanted to post one of my favorite photographs, which is hard for me because I don’t like to limit myself to just one of anything and then put a title like favorite on it, so I won’t. I found this photograph when I was looking for something completely different and it just caught my attention. It isn’t famous or hanging in a museum or anything like that-which is another reason I chose it. I like it because you can’t help but realize all of the hard work that went into this shot. It was taken with a telephoto lens, and in shutter priority…a fast shutter if I’m not mistaken, and yellow (i’ll say it, my favorite) is the dominate color.It’s taken in New York City and really captures the feel of the city and how fast paced it is.

South Carolina State House

I took this picture in journalism 337 last year. It just so happens to be our very own South Carolina State House! It was late afternoon so the lighting was absolutely perfect. Again I used a simple point and shoot camera, but somehow miracles happen and I got this beautiful shot. I prefer to take photographs of landscapes because growing up on a farm landscapes are all there is. This picture is my favorite because the angle makes the perspective more interesting. I took it later in the day so the sky adds a lovely blue to the photo. I was really impressed with this picture and extremely happy with the outcome.

My name is Jessica Huggins. I am a third year Visual Commnications major at the
University of South Carolina. My favorite color is yellow and I am from a town that you’ve never heard of. I’ve only ever used a point and shoot camera, meaning my photography is only mediocre at best. I love Reba McEntire, and I once had a pet pig. I’m a visual communicator so I notice things like logos, I dream about Photoshop and Illustrator, and I judge books by their cover. I want to make commercials when I grow up. In case you’re wondering, Optima is my favorite typeface, Bell is growing on me, and I look down on people who use Papyrus. As for photography, I don’t have much experience outside class. I have come to know and love Photoshop and the entire adobe suite, but that’s as far as my digital media knowledge takes me. I’m a middle child, and all three of us have the same birthday. It’s really strange and probably the coolest thing about me. Soo…enjoy the blog.
